In one fell swoop, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State lost thousands of its members including the cream of its political class to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.
The defectors dumped the PDP during the APC campaign rally at Idu, the Uruan local government headquarters.
Among them were Barr Edet Bassey, a former PDP State Legal Adviser, Dr Patrick Ndon, a former Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Barr Uduak Effiong, a former Commissioner in the State Law Reform Commission, Barr Orok Orok, a former Chairman of Uruan Local Government, Mrs Sarah Ikpong, a former Uruan PDP Chapter Women Leader, and Engr Gregory Udofia, the PDP leader in Uruan Ward 5.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Engr Udofia said they joined the APC because the PDP had nothing to offer Uruan and did not wish the area well.
Mr Ini Okopido, the APC State Chairman, who received the defectors, said their defection marked the end of PDP in Uruan.
“Today has marked the final collapse of PDP in Uruan. The PDP machinery of Uruan has collapsed in favour of APC,” he said.
