The Paramount Ruler of Ikono Local Government Area, Edidem Nyong Obop, has endorsed the ambition of the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Nsima Ekere, for the March 2, 2019 election.
Speaking when he received the APC campaign team at his palace in Ibiaku Ntok Okpo, Edidem Obop said: “There is no need to talk much. If they give me that ticket to give the new Governor, I will give it to him (Obong Nsima Ekere).”
The monarch, a retired State Auditor-General, stated further: “For as long as God has brought this wonderful coincidence that made you and Governor Akpabio to come together here, I will not hesitate to say that your problems are over.”
Reacting, Obong Ekere pledged to address the infrastructural deficit in Ikono, the ancestral home of the Ibibio, the dominant ethnic group in Akwa Ibom State, by making Ikono a Special Development Area.
He restated his promise to grant financial autonomy to local governments to ensure development at the grassroots which has been stifled by the system operated by the present State Government.
“We have come with a rescue agenda to rescue Akwa Ibom State from poverty and hunger,” he said.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former Governor of the state, described Ekere as a tested and experienced administrator who has brought development to the Niger Delta including Ikono and Ini as Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He also lauded Obong Ekere for ensuring the completion of the Independent Power Plant as Chairman of Ibom Power Company during his time as Governor such that today Akwa Ibom State is among the states that generate power.
“There is a difference between an incoming Governor and a mere candidate. The one I am presenting to you is anointed by God to be Governor,” Senator Akpabio told the Paramount Ruler and his chiefs.”
Addressing Obong Ekere, Senator Akpabio said: “In this state, God has destined that we will join the centre of this country and you are going to be the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Nsima Ekere is on a rescue mission. You have come to salvage Akwa Ibom State.”
Senator Ita Enang, the Director-General of the APC Campaign Organization, enjoined Ikono people to join the rest of the state to vote for the APC and do away with opposition politics against the centre.
Senator Aloysius Etok, the former representative of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, expressed gratitude to the Paramount Ruler for the endorsement and promised that Obong Ekere will not disappoint Ikono people.
