The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has completed emergency repair of two roads and will soon award contract for the construction of five more roads in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The Managing Director of the commission, Mr. Nsima Ekere, announced this on Saturday during a reception rally for him by the people of Mkpat Enin.
He named the roads that underwent emergency repairs as Ekparakwa – Ekpene Ukpa Road, which passes through Mkpat Enin, and Ibekwe Akpanya – Ikot Akpaden Road.
The NDDC boss stated that renovation of six blocks of classrooms in different primary and secondary schools in Mkpat Enin has also been completed.
According to him, major construction work was ongoing on 3km Ndot/Abat – Ufet Ikono Road and the Regional Specialist Hospital at the Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, both in Mkpat Enin.
Ekere announced that contract will soon be awarded for the construction of five more roads cutting across Mkpat Enin, namely 7km Ndon Utim (Etinan) – Nya Odiong – Ikot Esen Road with spur to Ekpuk; 7km Ikot Obio Itong – Ikot Obiokoi – Ikot Abia Road; 1km Ikot Ekong – CMC Road; 5km Ekim – Ndon Obodom Road and 3km Minya – Ikot Essang Road.
Similarly, contract will be awarded for the construction of a hostel at the Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden, provision of water at Odoro Ikot and renovation of various primary and secondary school buildings and health centres across the local government area.
Ekere used the opportunity to announce that NDDC engineers would visit the Government Technical College, Ikot Akata, venue of the rally, to assess the dilapidated school buildings for renovation.
He commended the Member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Engr. Otobong Ndem, who formally defected from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) at the rally, for being able to move with several present and past PDP officials, pointing out that it was a sign of good representation and a lesson to others occupying or seeking political positions.
The APC Gubernatorial Candidate reasoned that the ongoing influx from the PDP to the APC was particularly unique to Akwa Ibom State.
His words: “Today, change has come to Mkpat Enin. What is happening in Mkpat Enin today is the same thing happening all over Akwa Ibom State. It means that the people of Akwa Ibom State have embraced change. It means that the people of Akwa Ibom State have abandoned the present PDP State Government because they have not done well. There is no other state in Nigeria that you find members of the political class and the people massively leaving the party of the Governor to the other party.”
Ekere disclosed that the influx was so overwhelming and almost daily that the APC State Executive Committee members have been forced to divide themselves into groups to be able to cope with the task of receiving new members.
In his speech, Ndem declared that their defection marked the death of PDP and the birth of APC in Mkpat Enin.
Said he: “With what is you are seeing today, we have finished election in Mkpat Enin. APC will win and will win convincingly. We will drive them (PDP) into the bush. When I speak, I speak with authority because I have the constitutional mandate of the people of Mkpat Enin to speak.”
The lawmaker assured Ekere of a landslide victory in Mkpat Enin in the 2019 election.
The Mkpat Enin Local Government Chapter Deputy Chairman of PDP, Mr. Ukonsek Ukonsek, who also defected, said the APC would sweep the polls in all 103 polling units and 14 wards of Mkpat Enin which boasts of over 70,000 votes.
He said they left the PDP with several Mkpat Enin Chapter Executive Committee members including the Secretary and Youth Leader, Ward Chairmen led by the Chairman of Ward Chairmen, 52 of the 87 Village Youth Presidents led by the Chairman of Conference of Village Youth Presidents, former PDP Chapter and Ward officers, former Local Government Vice Chairman and former Councillors.
Receiving the defectors, the APC Deputy State Chairman, Dr. Ita Udosen, who represented the State Chairman, Mr. Ini Okopido, saluted their mass movement and assured them of equal rights with old members of the party.
The Member representing Essien Udim State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Sir Nse Ntuen, who represented Senator Godswill Akpabio, said victory for the APC in Akwa Ibom State in the 2019 elections was certain because all the players that used to make the PDP win elections were now all in the APC.
His Itu State Constituency counterpart, Prince Idongesit Ituen, hinted that more Assembly Members were on their way to the APC.
The immediate past representative of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Aloysius Etok, described Ekere as a good product who was already performing as a Governor because “he is doing all that a Governor should do.”
The Mkpat Enin APC Chapter Chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Udo, the Chapter Woman Leader, Mrs. Comfort Smith, the APC House of Assembly Candidate for Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Prince Iboro Ekpo, and a veteran politician, Barr. Ini Ekpo, also addressed the rally.
